A few days ago, I found I held in my hands a piece of a puzzle that a gaming community needed to complete a puzzle they’ve been working on for some time now, so I decided to have a little fun, and much to my chagrin, it became a prime example of humanity at it’s best and worst.

As teachers tend to ask “what have I learned from this?”, I can tell you quite frankly, quite a bit.

- Someone went through and one starred all my blogs, which is funny because on a lot of the older ones, it was the only rating they received. Hope you enjoyed them…

- A majority of the comments I got I couldn’t post either because of bad spelling (assumed people were frothing at the mouth making the keyboard slippery) or they were laced with vulgarities. Really though, it’s been a while since I’ve had someone threaten to disable my internet…*boggle* that would seem counter-productive don’cha think? *shrug*

- Don’t eat German Chocolate brownies while reading said comments…they make a mess.

- The majority of my “Faction” (Dragon- see last weekends post for an explanation) seem to…understand the RP aspects of the decision I made. Seeing how this is a MMORPG (see this blogpost for an explanation of what that is), I figured more would jump on board for what was planned as a very short reminder that though the community is working together, the factions are at war…

I’ll post the the pictures on here in the next couple days to appease the masses once I finish cataloging the rest of my Magic Cards, but really…

My internet???

Till next time…

I’m a Dragon.

I don’t play sides- I manipulate them.

Knowledge is power and from where I’m sitting, I’m the most powerful person on the planet -Tymaara Akeis

I probably just lost a bunch of people, so I’ll have to backtrack a bit. “Tymaara Akeis” is the moniker I go by in most-all the RPG’s I play. It just rolls off the tongue nice and can fit to most any race possible, outside of Orcs and Goblins.

Now the reason for the quote: There’s a little game coming out called The Secret World sometime next year- Imagine all the conspiracies, fairy tales and horror stories you’ve heard in your life are based on truth…

that they’re all real…

…and you have The Secret World.

In this world, protecting you,are 3 factions: The Illuminati, The Templars, and The Dragon.

Illuminati are the power brokers- the tech savvy, government controlling S.O.B.’s that put mind control substances in your tap water. Their business is shady business.

Then you have the Templars- These are the over-righteous zealots that use the name of God to justify their grasp for power. Yeah- they hid the Holy Grail…if you have a problem with that you meet the working end of a 12-gauge shotgun.

Finally, there are the Dragon. That they exist is all you need to know.

So back on track- So from time to time the development team runs puzzles to get the communities thinking caps on. The solutions usually lead to new information on the game and just adds a great flavor and history to The Secret World.

The community goes to great ends to solve these puzzles, but it seems that a grave mistake has been made…

They sent Tymaara Akeis a piece of the puzzle.

More explanation is needed I think…

So I’d won a signed poster back in January from a contest the community had run, and since I was going through all that other “stuff” in my life, I had filed receiving the thing on the “lesser important things to worry about” place of my brain. About 3 weeks or so ago, I get a shipping roll, labeled from the person running the contest. I noted “cool”, checked out the poster and the cool Dragon Button, sealed up the package and put it with the rest of the “stuff to be moved when I get my apartment” pile in the Garage.

Then my e-mail inbox blows up last week and I find out there was a third item in the roll. A Puzzle Piece- A letter on one side and…something…on the reverse. The community is clamoring (okay, maybe not clamoring) for info on this piece, and I thought to myself:

What would Tymaara do?

For one, she just wouldn’t give out this info freely. The other two factions want the answer to the secret this puzzle holds. She could give the info to another Dragon…but she’d been burnt in the past before.

Decisions, decisions….

So yes, I’ve re-entered the world of dating for some time now (no need to sit on idle hands) and I thought that signing up for these online dating sites I’d find the perfect match (at least according to the commercials), seeing as how my life revolves around work, M:tG and sleep at the moment. It seemed like a perfect match- never having to leave the computer AND meet potential gaming partners!

Yeah- it never works out the way you planned…

Now the following is what I’ve found (though I haven’t given up hope)

1. I’m picky. I mean REALLY picky. Picky to the point of feeling shallow. Shallow like a toddler pool. Pool like the swimming kind- not the game with sticks. Sticks and stones can break my…oops…sorry- got off on a tangent. I feel really bad for not returning messages to “searching for Mr. right, but Mr. Right now will do” or ” Fun loving woman built for two, just right for you“, but I’m just not feeling it, sorry.

2. Women are even pickier- Who doesn’t like a total geek that acts like he’s 12, collects action figures and plays video games all day. Jeesh- Gurlz are th3 Dumzz. Seriously though, and it may be my ego talking, but I’m a catch! Maybe the photo of me in my darth vader costume IS a bit much, but that’s who I am.

3. All these sites want your life story. In all actuality, people seldom read the whole thing- I personally scan for spelling errors and search for key-words like “Star wars”, ”Magic: the Gathering”, “Sci-fi/Fantasy” and “Roleplay”. Any of those I will usually take the time and read the rest, though “roleplay” apparently doesn’t mean what it used to, so I’m thinking of striking that one off my list.

Gah!!! Never preview and then hit publish instead…Oh my naked, uncompleted blog!!!!

Anyway…

4. Do I pay or not? It seems the free sites let you actually talk to potential dates, so it seems like a waste of money to me, money better spent on said DATE. Call me wierd, but seems logical to me, and I’m not even Vulcan.

5. Women hardly ever message first- I thought this was the 21st century?!?!

6. There are too many sites to keep track of, but it seems like all the same people are on them. Granted, I’m IN this group, but still- can’t we all just pick ONE site and stick to it?

Oh.My.Goodness.

So I just, on a whim, decided to search google for “Single Geek Girls” and there is actually a site dedicated to geeks finding geeks. I feel a part 2 coming on…I’m off to peruse www.Sweetongeeks.com this should provide HOURS of blog material…*snicker*

The following tips are of course meant for the single closet geek, because naturally all the married ones have “caves” already and have no need to subtly position their belongings in such a manner as to not overwhelm potential partners, because frankly, you probably already do. So for you married/in relationship folks, scroll down, because I have a treatise on Unicorns you may enjoy.

So you’re looking for a place to live…

We’ve all been there. Our parents’ basement starts to get too confining, your significant other made you choose between your video game collection and him/her, or you simply just need more space for your Legos. I understand and I’m here to help.

These tips should be taken for what they are- Tips. These are not rules or regulations, nor should they be followed point by point, as everyone’s situation can vary and I’d hate for you to end up having a walk-in closet for all your high-heels if you only have tennis shoes and flip flops.

Let us begin…

#1: Location, Location, Location…

A. It should be close to the required locations: a convenience store (for midnight Mt. Dew), your local comic/gaming shop (bus/driving distance) and near a “cool hang-out spot” for cover on Friday/Saturday nights. Being close to work or family is a consideration, but not that important.

B. It should have a pool. Who doesn’t like pools?

C. Ample parking for all your gaming buddies who’ll need to quiet down after rolling 4xCrit on the Mighty Dragon of Zyzamoth- it was all luck…

D. Avoid places with college students (hazing), old people (holiday fruit cakes) or those that plan nefarious deeds (He who shall not be named)

E. It should have a pool.

#2: Interior Layout

A. Avoid upper floor apartments for when D&D and drinking is involved (see: featherfall)

B. If you cannot afford a two-bedroom apartment, then you should at least have a suitable closet in which to store your plethora (I heart that word) of Magic cards. Optionally, you could use the 5000 count boxes as a coffee table, but remember- we’re closet geeks here…

C. The dining room should be large enough to hold a table that can be converted into a battlefield at a moments notice, possibly using a double sided tablecloth (the reverse side being a grid-map). As well, the much needed computer desk should be placed here, available at a moments notice.

D. The living room should be large enough for a ample flat-screen TV, the new R2-D2 Xbox (oh yes, it will be mine…) and a couch juuuuust small enough so your potential girlfriend has to snuggle during Fringe.

*yes, neighbor-who-shall-not-be-named, that was a good idea…*

E. Your furnishings should be Geek Chic, but try to avoid, if you can, bringing the large cable spool with you. Small amounts of art, such as the Gentle Giant Darth Talon statue, is encouraged to slowly acclimate your visitors to the fact that you are, in fact, a geek.

#3: The Bedroom (bow-chicka-boww-wow)

A. This is your room friend! Anything goes- this IS your apartment after all, so break out that Star Wars comforter your mom made, hang your figures on the walls and get that darth vader lightsaber night light plugged in!

B. Realize, with said comforter, figures and nightlight, you will probably not “get any”, so keep in mind the couch in the living room…which is much too small…

Nooooo!!!! Damn you, He who shall not be named!!!!

Hopefully these small tips help some, and for the other folks, here is the part about the Unicorns….

In my book, the Unicorns are carnivorous….Oh yeah- these ain’t your mama’s sparkly Unicorns buddy!

Till next time, when hopefully I’ve pulled a fellow Geek-ette out of her own closet to join me for a little discussion on something we haven’t decided yet.

Till next time!

Actually, it began back in January, but for posterity we’ll say it’s starting now.

So my Geek Quotient or “GQ” as I like to call it, has dropped dramatically since last we talked. I haven’t really touched a Video Game for ages (losing at mario 3 made me realize this), I lose horribly every night I play competitive MtG, and I haven’t watched Star wars in over 6 months. Yes- that last one makes me shudder as well.

So…if I’m loosing my cred, why continue to read this blog?

Well…

1: You get to watch me crawl from the rotting abscess of normality and get myself back to my fun-natured self!

2: You other closet geeks (and I feel for ya) can learn how to mix life, love and happiness with Frags, Zergs and two-turn kills!

3: You’ll get to witness thought processes never before seen on paper! (Technically, they’ll never hit paper, but you get my drift)

4: You get the first chapter of my book for free! (Yes, an actual, honest to goodness BOOK… written by me of all people)

5: You may just read something that changes your life!

6: You’ll meet Hawt chicks!!!! (Flaming Poultry FTW!!!)

So starting next week, I’ll explain more , as it’s almost midnight where I sleep.

For now, let us begin at the beginning and skip to the middle where I’ll end with a note- Life is Grand.

Now, once the computer nerds stop rolling on the ground laughing from me thinking this is any type of “programming”…

It’s my hope that using this and twitter (once I figure out how to use it correctly, as has been pointed out to me), I’ll connect to new readers, which will lead to…

Well, I haven’t figured that part out yet. I’ll climb that mountain when I get to it.

In any case- I have a page. Yes…I feel special.

Okay- this is a geek column, so my apologies now to all the doctors expecting this to be trial results from some drug test.

So the title of today’s blog is fitting on so many levels that I’m giddy with excitement at having real content for once…

What did I want to say?

Oh yeah! Tweaking.

As you can see, I’m working on updating the blog visually. I had to find a theme (since I have no idea how to make one myself) that allowed some creative leeway without throwing me to the wolves. It looks a lot cleaner, I can add background images and even the header (which will be changing) is larger. All I can say is “yay!”. I just have to be careful not to tweak too much or it’ll get broken…

…kind of like my Magic Deck. (like that segue there?) The first week I came back to competitive play, I got 4th place and seemed to make no friends by being the new guy walking in and beating strangers. It was a good feeling to think I still had the ability to make a good deck and be able to “hang” with players that have been in the scene for a while.

Then I tweaked.

The next outing, I went 0 and out, not winning one game or match. What happened was, I thought I had better ideas for this deck and swapped out a bunch of cards, which in turn made it completely awful- but at least the people were talking to me now.

Mistake #1 was not writing down a deck list before tearing it apart. Mistake #2 was dumping the whole idea for the following week and making a brand new deck I just threw together last minute and again going 0 and out.

That would be goose-egg and 8 the last two weeks. All because of over-tweaking.

Lesson learned, I took last week off and I’m doing old school deck building. I have a notepad, and I’m writing everything down.

So I guess you can consider this an advice column today. Don’t fix it if it isn’t broke, and if it is broke…that sucks.

Well, it looks like I’m officially playing again.

First, the shop I scouted is a small, local shop seething with Geek. Great customer service and they know what they’re talking about. I found my “hang-out” for sure.

Second I still have my DCI acount- This is what keeps track of your local, national and international rankings for organized play. I’m way at the bottom, but that’ll change soon enough. I’ve even begun creating my first “deck” of cards I think I’ll be using in tournaments. Now IF I had the money to have all the possible cards for this deck idea, it’d cost around $190. Yeah, I’m working with what I’ve got…

Lastly, I think I created a monster. I had meant to get my younger brother to play my guinea pig on deck builds, but it seems he’s motivated to kick my butt, and is into this as much as I am now- He even got himself registered for the DCI.

Just a short update today. Tonights a couple tournaments, so I’ll give more detailed results (if I remember them) after the games are done..

Live Life, Play Hard, Die Geek!
