Video Games 101: The Terminology

I realize that I have many many friends that don’t play games, yet I invite them to read this blog, knowing full well they might not understand what I’m talking about.

So as a public service to the uninitiated, I will attempt to use layman’s terms to help define the key aspects of that thing we call “Video Games.”  Hopefully then, the next time I (or your child) go on about how we were “fragged” in a “PvP CoT” and that our “Guild” are not really the best “Min/Max-ers”, you can say “Ahhhh, now that makes sense”.

So we’ll start with terms thrown around the  playground:

MMO/MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online/Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game): These are games where real people get together and play at the same time…Oh wait!    I forgot a definition….

Real Person: Someone of flesh and blood with real feelings. Tend to not look anything like their Avatar. Some have Skillz.

Avatar: Outrageously beautiful representations of real people in games, that if they existed in real life would lead to the fall of man, due to the fact that 99% of all avatars in games are female with big boobs. Not in any way related to the movie.

Skillz: The ability to play games very well and forget everything you learned in school at the same time.

English: A language consisting of defined characters to form words. Very acceptible form of communication in games.

133t (leet) 5p3ak(speak): The “language” used by a large portion of real people with “skillz”. Consists of random characters, that when put together look like a word, but just make you think of the amount of time and effort wasted that could have been used playing said game.

Roleplayer: Real People that become their Avatar. Most believe they are destined by…er…destiny to become the hero of the land and are actually the long lost heir to whichever crown is popular at the time. Tend to speak in Shakespearian English and wear costumes while playing. #1 cause of sword wounds to computers.

Power-Gamer: The polar oposite of a roleplayer. Their goal is usually to finish first just to say they finished first, then complain about nothing to do. These gamers do not have “skillz” per sey… just stamina. A main target audience for red bull and adult diaper advertisements on gaming websites. Speak mostly in, as defined above” “Leet Speak”. Tend to have names like “lolafkwtfbbl” or “bob”.

Guild: A support group for like minded nerds.

PvP (player vs. player): this is one I have a problem defining, as my PvP experiences usually go like this:

Them: Oh look, there’s Will

Me: oh crap…

Pew pew pew

Them: Look…we got Will again for the 73rd time today…what a Noob!

hope that clears it up…I won’t talk about PvP much anyway.

Noob: Someone with no skillz.

that I think covers the basics…Welcome to my world!
